that were ranked nationally in the Civic 50, an annual study released by Bloomberg Business, National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) and Points of Light, which identifies the nation’s most community-minded businesses. Orange County boasts a large number of community-engaged companies. In fact, 40% of the companies ranked in the Civic 50 have a presence here in Orange County, including Walmart, UnitedHealth Group, Bank of America, AT&T, State Street Corp., Gap, UPS and Abbott.

The Civic 50 evaluated S&P 500 corporations and how they best used company philanthropy and employee volunteerism to impact their employees, customers and communities. The study assessed companies on five key dimensions: How extensively and in what ways they apply their resources to improving the community, how their community engagement initiatives support their own interests and are institutionalized within company policies, and how well they measure the performance of their community engagement programs.

of Community Affairs, said “Positively impacting communities through funding and grants or through inspiring volunteer efforts of Walmart associates demonstrates Walmart’s passion to give back to the communities in which it operates.” Although Walmart is the nation’s largest retailer, Walmart founder Sam Walton stressed “Each Walmart store should reflect the values of its customers and the vision they hold for their community.”

Alex Uhm, COO of UnitedHealth Group of California, stated that UnitedHealth Group “is committed to being a part of the fabric of Orange County,” explaining that on top of employee volunteering, the company’s corporate giving helps 27 community clinics in Orange County every year. Bank of America’s Orange County employees contributed a total of 27,000 volunteer hours at local nonprofits in 2013.

The Civic 50 reported that businesses that implement strategic community engagement programs gain significant bottom line benefits. UnitedHealth Group found that employee volunteering develops their employees’ time management and teamwork skills and strengthens relationships among colleagues, contributing to a more effective workplace.

In 2013, Walmart, UnitedHealth Group and Bank of America collectively gave an impressive $9.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to Orange County nonprofits. These companies and the others recognized in the Civic 50 understand that strategic company giving and volunteering not only improves the quality of life of the Orange County community, but also plays a vital part in their overall business success. “It just makes good business sense to put the interests of our customers and communities first, as our success will follow,” stated Allen Staff, Orange County Market President of Bank of America.
